ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERSHIP 2 Organizational Leadership and Interprofessional Team Development Business Practices The business practices of a healthcare organization that relates to patient-centered care are their policies, procedures, and systems. While the policies and procedures are in place to direct staff while caring for patients, a positive outcome for the patients and their families is the ultimate goal of these policies and procedures. For example, a hospital policy will provide a staffing matrix for a nurse-patient ratio. This policy takes into consideration the acuity of the patients. Without a policy to limit the number of patients a nurse is caring for, the nurse becomes primarily task-oriented rather than patient-care oriented. Providing patient-centered care requires time and decreasing the number of patients per nurse provides more time per patient. Procedures and systems aid in patient-centered care while helping to prevent adverse events such as pressure ulcers and falls. Hospital procedures together with the health information system (HIS) provide guidance and reminders for nursing staff while providing care. The HIS will score a patient based on a standardized language for a high risk of falls and skin breakdown. Tasks will electronically fire and precautions ordered for regular turning and repositioning to prevent pressure ulcers and fall precautions to be initiated. This places the patients’ health and safety as a priority and assists the nurse in providing patient-centered care. Regulatory Requirements Both state and federal agencies impose regulatory requirements on the healthcare facility to promote patient-centered care. These requirements are not an option; failure to comply results in steep penalties. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA), the Affordable Care Act (ACA), and the Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Act (PSQIA) are examples of federal regulatory requirements that promote patient-centered care. Together, these

Accreditation of the healthcare facility is a voluntary process that outwardly exemplifies the facility’s commitment to patient-centered care. A well-known accrediting agency is the Joint Commission. Their recommendations are patient-focused with the goal of optimal outcomes by requiring proper patient identification, clear staff communication, safe use of medication, and prevention of infections. Their quality measure recommendations are based on these criteria: multiple research-based studies that illustrate the improvement of outcomes, documentation of the desired outcome and few or no adverse effects (Sullivan, n.d.).
