SIO 10 - Winter 2010 Homework 1 Due Friday, January 15 Lectures 1, 2, 3 20 Points Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper with your name and student ID on it. Short, concise answers are preferred above lengthy ones. Note that your handwriting must be legible to receive credit. Be sure to answer all sub-questions. 1. Scientists use the ‘scientific method’– a sequence of four steps – to systemically analyze a scientific problem. Put the four steps in the correct order: I) Testing a hypothesis, II) collecting data, III) recognizing a problem, and IV) proposing a hypothesis (2 pts). First, scientist need to recognize a problem or a ‘mystery’. After collecting data, they propose a hypothesis that could explain the observations. Finally, scientists test their idea to make sure it is right. 2. a) How old is the Earth (1pt)? b) How old is the Universe (1pt)? c) Is the Universe expanding or contracting? What’s the evidence?
