Anthony Bahena Sio 10 HW 5 February 18, 2010 Problem set 5 1) a) The three types of faults are (1) active which are found in convergent plate boundaries and the plates override each other and go through subduction, (2) inactive are found in divergent plate boundaries and are in the mid-ocean ridges, and (3) blind or hidden faults are found in transform plate boundaries and these are known fir slipping which causes the fault. b) Elastic rebound theory is overall the reflection of how earthquakes come to be, this is seen when faulting occurs and the amount of stress on the rock is lowered causing the elasticity being withheld to be decreased. This causes the layers in the rock to no longer have to bend because the rock has rebounded and when friction comes into ply the bars movement keeps the fault in place until stress builds up to repeat the process. c) The four waves in order of velocity are (1) Primary waves, (2) Secondary waves, (3) love waves, and (4) Rayleigh waves.
