Anthony Bahena Anthony Bahena SIO 10 Earth Homework 2 January 22, 2010 Problem Set 2 1) a) Plate tectonics consist of exchanges of materials between the earth’s crust and the mantle, the other driving force is the sliding of 15 to 20 plates that move relative to each other. This is because when a plate moves its external area remains intact, while rock around it experiences deformation, such as cracking, sliding, bending, stretching, and squashing, b) (1) A boundary where to plates move apart with respect to each other is knows as a divergent boundary. (2) A boundary where two plates will move towards each other and one plates sinks into the other is known as a convergent boundary. (3)The last boundary is when a plate slips along the side of another plate and that is known as a transform boundary. c) Oceanic crust is created in the Divergent Boundary since asthenospheric mantle rises beneath a mid-ocean ridge and there it starts to partially melt forming magma and that magma rises to form new oceanic crust when it cools. In the Convergent boundaries one plate slides under the
