The History of Science & the Science of History in the 20th Century GE70DW Sect 3 – Adam Lawrence This seminar will deal with the application of concepts from the natural sciences to the understanding of modern human social history, as well as the use of human social history to understand how those concepts which we learned about in the first two quarters originated. To this end, the seminar will be divided into two basic parts: 1. The History of Science: A history of the biological and physical sciences in the 20th century, based on the reading of original scientific articles and excerpts from books and longer articles. We will read one important (and short) scientific text each week, and students will be responsible for figuring out why it is important to the history of those scientific concepts which we learned about in the first two quarters of class. We will then discuss the larger social context of the scientific activities of which that weeks article is a part.
