Evolution of the Brain, Mind, and Consciousness 70CW Section #2, Spring Quarter F 9-12, Public Affairs 2278 Jason Richard Miller Office TBD Hours TBD Jrm034@ucla.edu 6265 Bunche Hall This course will cover the evolution of the human brain and its relations to the mind and consciousness. In the first part of the course we will look at a few contemporary evolutionary views of the brain and consciousness. We will then consider both classical and contemporary philosophical views of the mind and consciousness. We will finish the course by reading and discussing the prospect of “neurohistory,” and by addressing two works of science fiction that devote themselves to the brain and mind. Throughout this course we will be asking how it is, or if, the brain relates to the mind and consciousness and how evolution shaped those relations; if we assume such relations can be know at all. Course Requirements 1. Class participation : 10% of grade: attendance and discussion. 2.
