1 Welcome to CHE 140, General Chemistry Today: 1. Cover syllabus 2. Next Readings and Homework (Normally up before class starts; available on course website) 3. Discuss How notes work 4. Start content 2 How notes are designed for CHE 140. I. The outlines I prepare are: 1. only outlines; they are not complete 2. the PowerPoint frames I use in class 3. available in .pdf format at the course web-site generally at least 24 hours before class II. The PowerPoint slides I show, show text : 1. in red when the topic of discussion 2. in black (or turn black) if present on outline 3. in blue (or turn blue) if NOT present on outline 3 III. To make good use of outlines and notes: 1. bring copies of outlines for lecture to lecture 2. write everything I write on the board in your notes 3. write everything which appears in blue in your notes 4. take notes on the outlines, or… 5. better yet, take notes in a separate notebook with tags indicating how notes and outlines fit together 6. soon after class, copy all notes and outlines
