TA: Christine Feng [email protected] Section: Mon 4-5 Center 205 OH: Wed 11-12 Geisel S&E This Week In Lecture: Immune Response Ig Fold MHC Fold Enzyme Catalysis Serine Proteases Acylation & Deacylation Chapter 11, 15 Immune Response Immune system: recognizes, destroys, and remembers foreign parasites while ignoring host cells & proteins Antigen recognizes foreign molecules immune response o B cells release immunoglobulins to circulation o T cells have T cell receptor that recognizes MHC class 1 protein Ig Fold Heterotetramer: 2 Light chains + 2 Heavy chains o Linked by 4 disulfide bonds stability o Hinge region of HC flexibility (Y/T conformations) Ig fold is distorted β barrel o Each LC contains 2 Ig folds, each HC contains 4 Ig folds o Distorted conformation stabilized by intra chain disulfide bridges Antigen recognition at loops between β strands at N-terminus of Ig Each Ig only recognizes one antigen – diff B cells diff Ig o Heavy & light chains are encoded by different genes o N terminus regions contain the most variability
