Syllabus MAE 146: Astronautics — Winter Quarter 2010 Instructor: Benjamin F. Teaching assistant: Erkut Aykutlug Email: eaykutlu Office hours: TTH 9:00-10:00am in EG1234 Course description: Broad overview of space systems from launch to operations and reentry. Emphasis will be placed on the basic mechanics, models, and control strategies used in astronautics. Topics will include motion in gravitational force fields, orbit transfers, rocketry, interplanetary trajectories, attitude dynamics and stabilization. Navigation, reentry and the space environment will be covered as time permits. Initiation to spacecraft trajectory design will be conducted through a design project. Class schedule: Lecture: MWF 1:00 – 1:50 pm, DBH 1500 Discussion: M 3:00 – 3:50 pm, DBH 1500 Prerequisite: Engineering Dynamics (MAE 80): Fundamental knowledge of mechanical systems (dynamics and kinematics of particle and rigid bodies) is required. Basic knowledge about ordinary differential equations, fluid mechanics and radiation phenomena is helpful but not required. Degree units: Credit units: 4 (one d esign unit) . Required course for Aerospace Engineering majors. Textbooks: Orbital Mechanics for Engineering Students , Howard Curtis, 2 nd Edition,Butterworth- Heinemann , 2009 (required).
