In part 1 of this experiment [Co(NH 3 ) 6 ]Cl 3 was synthesized. This was done by adding 1.013g of CoCl 2 6H 2 O to .702g of NH 4 Cl. 1 ml of H 2 O was then added and 3 ml of NH 4 OH. Charcoal was added as a catalyst and then 3 ml of 10% H 2 O 2 . The final mass of the product was .204g. The limiting reagent for this experiment was the CoCl 2 6H 2 O. The theoretical yield was 1.069g and percent yield was 19%. This large difference may have been due to loss of product due to filtering and spilling. In part 2 of this experiment [Co(NH 3 ) 5 Cl]Cl 2 was synthesized. This was done using 1.01g of CoCl 2 6H 2 O, .701g of NH 4 Cl, 3 ml of NH 4 OH, 3 ml of H 2 O 2 , and 3 ml of HCl. The mass of product yielded was .818g. The limiting reagent was the CoCl 2 6H 2 O. The theoretical yield was 1.073g. The percent yield was 76.23%. The limiting reagent was CoCl 2 6H 2 O. The theoretical yield was 1.043g. The percent yield was 65%. Possible sources of error for this part were improper airing, over heating, and improper filtering. In part 4 of this experiment cis-[Co(en) 2 Cl 2 ]Cl was synthesized from trans-[Co(en) 2 Cl 2 ]Cl. This was done by adding water to .341g of cis product and heating until it isomerized. The theoretical yield was .341g while the actual yield was .282g. The percent yield was 82.69%.
