CLST 101 07/10/2009 20:52:00 - Greek land was not very fertile  - myth - when God created world, there was no good land left so he gave bad land to  Greece - organization is solution to land problem - colonization for Greeks did not mean suppression, religious conversion, etc - meant Apoika (a home away from home) - became good at trade/commerce from colonization - traded mainly wine and pottery  - Euboeans – Emporion – trade point(Al Mina) - Phoenicians traded mainly purple dye, metals, food - refrained from trading inland - Greeks took over Phoenician alphabet but added new signs for vowels - 734 – 580 BC – colonization Never meant to occupy large territories Never used local population for slave labour/man power No indoctrination of religious beliefs - Oikist- father founding new colony can be joined by others in his endeavours - colonies took orders from Greeks(like satellites)
