Patronage 05/03/2010 16:35:00 Patronage – Lat. Pater ‘father’ Manus manum lavat – you do something for me, I do something for you lit means  “a hand washes another hand” - creation of ideology of responsibility that a state has towards its citizens, it must  protect its citizens - protection of life, rights - Roman’s did not have social protection from government so they sanctioned the  patroni  - groups of people 3 types of power in Roman society (Expressions of) 1. Potestas (eg. Patria potestas) – power held by magistrates, only power  with state behind it 2. Auctoritas – authority, power in a non-legal way . . moral power 3. Gratia – influence or authority,  patroni(patronus)  - from upper-class families with power - you would be a very rich man who makes himself accessible to people who are  not legally bounds to him (cliens) or clientes
