Week Three 1 These days if your PC is connected to the internet (and really who isn’t?), you will want to protect yourself as many potential security threats as possible. While it is impossible identify, and protect your PC from, all security threats; this paper will examine the most common PC security threats and some of the techniques employed by hackers. I will explain malware, including: viruses, worms, and Trojans, as well as spyware, adware, and spam. Malware is any unwanted program that is transmitted to a computer without the user’s knowledge and it is designed to varying degrees of damage. Malware can be designed to create a backdoor in your system to allow unauthorized access to hackers. There are many types of infestations including; viruses, Trojan horses, worms, adware, spyware, keyloggers, dialers, and downloaders. A virus is a program that often has an incubation period, it’s infectious, and is intended to cause damage, similar to a virus that infects people. The infected program

Week Three 2 must be executed in order for the virus to run. A virus program might destroy data and programs or damage a disk drive’s boot sector. Some symptoms of a computer virus are an unresponsive system, missing data and system crashes.
