The sexual response cycle describes the body’s response to sexual stimulation and consists of four phases. The first stage is excitement, second is plateau, third is orgasm, and the fourth and final stage is resolution. These phases describe the changes that occur in the body as men and women become sexually aroused. Excitement Phase The excitement phase is the first phase of the sexual response cycle. The excitement phase is characterized by erection in the male, vaginal lubrication in the female, myotonia, and increases in the heart rate in both male and female. In men the excitement stage vasocongestion can cause an erection in young men which can happen in three to eight seconds after sexual stimulation has begun. When this occurs the male’s scrotal skin thickens and will become less baggy. Also their testes will become larger. With a woman vasocongestion cause the area surrounding the opening of the vagina to swell. The excitement phase will cause the clitoris to flatten and the lips will swell. This phase can also cause vaginal lubrication which may start ten to thirty seconds after sexual stimulation has begun. Although there are a few things that men and women have in common. Some of those things are vasocongestion of genital tissues, heart rate and blood pressure increase, and the nipples may become erect. Plateau Phase The plateau phase is the second stage of the sexual response cycle. During the plateau phase sexual arousal is somewhat stable. The plateau phase is characterized by increases in vasocongestion, muscle tension, heart rate, and blood pressure in preparation for an orgasm. The
