Geography of Hunger 1.02 billion people do not get enough food on a daily basis. 25% of world’s undernourished people are in Africa (200 million). Sub-Saharan Africa has greatest proportion of population undernourished; South Asia has the greatest in absolute numbers. People in rural areas suffer greater prevalence of undernutrition, yet this is where food is grown. ..

Progress ? • 1996 World Food Summit target: Cut hunger in half worldwide by 2015. FAO, “virtually no progress” toward WFS goals after 10 years. The proportion of undernourished decreased slightly from 20% in 1992 to 17% in 2003. Absolute number increased to 1.02 billion in 2009. III. Declining National Food Security Over the past 30 years, there has be a trend toward decreasing national food self-suf±ciency in TW Most African countries are net food/agricultural importers. This was not always the case. TW food trade imbalance: surplus of $1 billion (1970s) to a de±cit of $11 billion (2002)

Countries most at risk for food shortages are the Low Income Food De±cit Countries ( LIFDCs ): ! low income per capita < $1,395 and a ! net food importer over the past 3 years FAO lists 84 LIFDCs: 27 in Africa , 24 in Asia-Paci±c; 4 in Latin America/Caribbean.
