What is music? • Music is the art of sound in time; it is an ordered pattern of sounds • Music is the use of sound and silence to get things done (including create emotional states) • What music expresses & how it is organized are culturally specific and culturally determined Some of the functions of music • Political: form of protest; basis of identity • Social: tells the news, history, a myth, a story • Cover up or blots out other unwanted sounds • Create an emotional state(lullaby, love song) • Sell products (advertisements, bar music, store music) • Make money (paid performances, begging) • Religious functions (praise, prayer, funeral, marriage, etc.) • Martial functions (game, hunting, warfare) Some features of African Music Remember: There is not just one African music but many varieties of African music. • African music is communal • African music is interactive • African music is polyrhythmic Some features of Western Music
