What is the Internet ? • A network of computer networks • A collection of computers and other devices inter-connected throughout the world. • Started by U.S. Department of Defense • Originally called ARPAnet (Advanced Research Projects Agency) • First node at UCLA (1969)

How do Internet devices communicate? • They communicate via Internet protocols •A protocol is a set of rules governing the format of messages exchanged. • To be part of the Internet, devices must communicate with each other using the protocol TCP/IP
