04/09/08 Romans like Greeks for the most part wrote on pyrus and they wrote in scrolls. The Jewish scriptures were written in scrolls as well. Christians began to use the codex to write. They would stitch together folded leaves which allowed you to open it up and you got a book! It was a different way of looking at scripture. You could now compare different stories. In the Roman world marriage is really promoted and you want to have children. Divorce is rampant. Early Christians stressed chasity and virginity. They also stressed no divorce and a notion of only one marriage. In the source book it is talked about in 170-178 ish. With Augustus there was the 200 year of Pax Romana. Traditionally the end of the Pax Romana it is marked with the emperor marcus arellies. He was a soldier, philosopher, and he actually grew a beard in the style of greek philosophers. When he dies we begin to see the rule of bad emperor. Commodus 177-192-
