Asian American Studies 60B Lecture 2 January 8, 2009 Globalization WWI WWII Position of US leading industrial power leading economic, political, and military power Europe: manifested in Europe, led to Marshal Plan, NATO Asia: Primarily in educational infrastructure, Extension of political and military presence Three reasons why US didn’t invest as much in Asia as it did in Europe; first Marshall plan was expensive about $13 Billion, second the European infrastructure was more advanced before the war, and third was racism, Europe white, Asia not. Racial thinking was the way people thought of one another in the world. Europeans felt like whites were the superior race. NATO results in US having military bases all across Western European. After WWII, the main area of conflict was in Asia. The US and Europeans tried to colonize the occupied areas in Asia. Britain grants India, Pakistan, and Burma independence because they took a huge hit in WWII. US grants the Philippines’ independence, but all documents infer that they are still part of US empire.
