Unformatted text preview: ENGRD 221: E NGINEERING T HERMODYNAMICS Problem Set 4 Not required to be turned in (5 Questions) Question 1 (MS 3.78) : A system consisting of 1 lb of Refrigerant 22 undergoes a cycle composed of the following processes: Process 1-2: Constant pressure from p 1 = 30 lbf/in. 2 , x 1 = 0.95 to T 2 = 40°F. Process 2-3: Constant temperature to saturated vapor with W 23 = -11.82 Btu. Process 3-1: Adiabatic expansion. Sketch the cycle on p-v and T-v diagrams. Neglecting kinetic and potential energy effects, determine the net work for the cycle and the heat transfer for each process, all in Btu. Question 2 (MS 3.84) : As shown in the figure below, 0.5 kg of ammonia is contained in a piston- cylinder assembly, initially at T 1 = -20°C and a quality of 25%. As the ammonia is slowly heated to a final state, where T 2 = 20°C, p 2 = 0.6 MPa, its pressure varies linearly with specific volume. There are no significant kinetic and potential energy effects. For the ammonia, (a) show the process on a sketch no significant kinetic and potential energy effects....
