1 Unsteady Flow A well insulated piston-cylinder assembly has 20 kg of water, 10 kg of which is in the vapor phase. The piston has a mass such that it maintains a ﬁxed internal pressure of 350 kPa. Steam at 1 MPa and 400 C is supplied to the assembly until all the water is vaporized. Determine the following: 1. The ﬁnal temperature in the cylinder 2. The mass of the steam that was added Assumptions : Quasi-static process Well-insulated ˙ Q cv = 0 Constant and uniform properties at the inlet Control volume is ﬁxed in space and is shown in the ﬁgure Ignore kinetic and potential energy eﬀects The ﬁnal state of the system is saturated vapor. Because the ﬁnal state of the system is saturated vapor, the ﬁnal temperature is 138.9 C The quality of the initial state is x = 10 kg / 20 kg = 0 . 5 1
