Recitation for Week 3 Important ideas: Pure substance, simple compressible system. State principle and independent properties. There are two independent properties . p-v-T relationships – surfaces, tables and equations Solid, liquid and gas phases / phase change processes . Single and two phase regions, quality Isothermal and isobaricquasiequilibrium processes on P-v and T-v diagrams . Using property tables Ideal gases and ideal gas model – condition for applicability (reduced T and p). pv = RT ; R = R /(mol. wt.) Why is c p for gases larger than c v . u = u(T) and h = h(T) for ideal gas. Recitation subjects Enthalpy and specific heats – define, use, measure (specific heats). Some hints on using the Tables (covered in lecture) – What are the givens? Do I have two intensive parameters? Mass/size? Where do these conditions place me – compressed liquid, two-phase region or superheat region? If it is the two-phase region, how do I find the quality, x?
