Oct 26 th  People as Civilized Beings Norms – What people typically do thing “A generally accepted way of thinking, feeling, or believing that people in a group agree  upon and endorse.” Norms can be  descriptive  (tell you what people actually do), or  injunctive  (tell you what  you  should  do). 1. How do norms form? *Can be imposed on a group *Can  emerge  within a group without explicit intention; convergence. The construction of norms: People can converge on a norm, and the group treats it as  their reality Sherif  (1936) – How to norms come about the group In dark norm n/a a small light, people perceive it as  Participants hear other peoples judgment in group sessions Sherif would remove original member 2 add new ones. They eventually converge on to  the norms. Once the norm is there, it won’t go away Asch  (1951) Conformity: “The convergence of an individual’s thoughts, feelings, and behavior toward  a group norm.” If people have clear information, people wouldn’t see conformity One Standard line / Comparison lines (3 lines)

Part of  “many people are doing this undesirable thing” is “many people  are  doing this!” “Your heritage is being vandalized every day by theft losses of petrified wood.”  Don’s steal petrified wood. - Injunctive Everyone steals petrified wood! – Descriptive Caildini et al.(2003)
