Are you passing on your genetic material to your offspring (and are they surviving)? 2. Differential Fertility a. Some individuals are reproducing more than others (differential gene reproduction) Sexual Selection Fitness based on competiton within the species. Two forms of this: 1. Inter-sexual selection: between the sexes 2. Intra-sexual selection: within the sexes 1. Inter-sexual selection: between the sexes a. Choosiness by the sex (typically female) that has greater parental investment in offspring 2. Intra-sexual selection: within the sexes a. Competition within the sex (typically male) that is competing for access to the “choosier” sex Parental Investment 1. Both males and females contribute half their genetic material to any individual offspring 2. Gametes are not the same: female ova much greater investement than male sperm 3. Investment in birth and early survival greater for females.
