In this part of thisexperiment, for the reversible reaction of Methyl Violet, H+ (aq) + MV - (aq)HMV (aq),it is expected that when acid is added to the solution the reaction will shift to the right to formmore HMV and remove the excess H+ giving making the color of the solution change fromviolet to yellow. If a bse is then added to this yellow solution containing mostly HMV, thesolution will again turn purple. For the reversible reaction, Mg(OH)2(s)Mg2+ (aq) + 2OH- (aq), it is expected that when solid magnesium hydroxide is in a basic solution it will notdissolve. However, when placed in an acidic solution it will dissolve.Variables:Independent: The base and/or acid to the solutionDependent: the color of the solution (which direction equilibrium shifts)Experimental Outline:1.Add 5 mL of water to a clean test tube2.Add 3 drops of the methyl violet indicator3.Record the color of the original solution4.Add 10 drops of 5.0 M HCl and record the color5.
