Twitchett and Wright make a strong argument for the importance of poetry during the Tang dynasty. In their writings, Tang poetry was not simply a high point of Chinese literate culture, but also an important source of insight into the lives of the writers and Tang society. The Tang dynasty was a high point in Chinese culture and the arts, and poetry was of no exception. Tang poetry provided the standard for all later Chinese poetry in the way it was written. The authors' argument is that Tang poetry provided valuable insight into everyday life during the Tang as interpreted by the writers of the poems (Twitchett, Wright p38). This is something that prose literature during that time failed to do, because it was still in its infancy, and the biographical records of an individual was restricted to his feelings towards official and formal matters (Twitchett, Wright p38-39).
