Three stages - acetyl CoA production (from glucose, fatty acids, amino acids) - acetyl CoA oxidation (via TCA cycle to give reduced electron carriers) - electron transfer (oxidation of reduced electron carriers) and oxidative phosphorylation with ATP formation Pyruvate Dehydrogenase Critical mitochondrial enzyme necessary to generate acetyl CoA. Functions of TCA Cycle - enables the cell to oxidatively metabolize products of glycolysis as well as lipid and protein catabolism - products are CO 2 , reduced electron carriers, a little high energy phosphate (GTP) - reactions in sections of the cycle are used in gluconeogenesis and in anabolic process involved in nitrogen metabolism CELLULAR RESPIRATION
