1 Human Genome Project 1990 - HGP (funded by DOE and NIH) proposed 15 year project: Goals: Map the human genome. Map and sequence genomes of other organisms important for the study of biology. Develop technology for analyzing DNA. Study ethical, legal and social implications of genome research. 2000 -All 23 chromosomes have now been sequenced by HGP and a private company - Celera Genomics (3 years). Almost all the DNA in a typical prokaryote, like E. coli , is contained in a single, large DNA molecule, its chromosome. 2. E.coli chromosome: 1 double stranded circular DNA, 4.7 x10 6 bp, 1.7 mm in length, 4,405 genes E. coli is 2μM in length
