Ryan Scarff Reasons Not to Drill in ANWR Drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge will simply suffocate the United States’ market from being innovative within the industry of alternative fuels. Within a Time Magazine cover story last spring, by Michael Grunwald headlined “The Clean Energy Scam.” Mr. Grunwald writes, “Biofuels do slightly reduce dependence on imported oil, and the ethanol boom has created rural jobs while enriching some farmers and agribusinesses. But the basic problem with most biofuels is amazingly simple, given that researchers have ignored it until now: using land to grow fuel leads to the destruction of forests, wetlands and grasslands that store enormous amounts of carbon.” Drilling in ANWR will eventually be financially harmful to U.S. citizens. This is made obvious by Presidents proposed plans concerning his cap and trade program. The section of Obama’s Cap and Trade Program that is most pertinent to the issue of drilling in Alaska is as follows:
