Quiz 2 ECE450 March 6, 2009 Friday Design a quarter-wave transformer to match two parallel-plate waveguides, each with a plate separation of 10 cm and filled with loss-less, non-magnetic dielectrics. The wave will propagate from a material with relative permittivity of 1.0 into a material with relative permittivity of 4.0. The operating frequency is 3 GHz and the mode of operation is the TE10 mode. The quarter- wave transformer should have a plate separation of 10 cm. Your design parameters will include the relative permittivity of the loss-less, non-magnetic dielectric used, and its physical length. We can use transmission line equivalents to solve this problem. We need to find the guide characteristic impedances of the two waveguides, and then can use our quarter-wave transformer equation to find the guide characteristic impedance of the QWT. The physical length of the QWT will be related to the guide wavelength in the QWT waveguide. The wave will be in TE 1,0
