Chem. 241 Lab Lecture Isolation of Essential Oils: PLKE Exp #14B Procedure like 14A only scaled up Glassware: Page 570, 704, 754 I. Announcements a) Read the techniques listed at the beginning of the lab procedure b) The procedure is written for oil of cloves, but you can use any spice you wish. Some fruits will also work, just check with me first! c) You need to bring ~5 g of your spice to lab with you. Bring whole not ground! d) We will only be doing the steam distillation portion, once you have collected the distillate you are finished with the lab. e) There is only one question to answer for the lab write up (in addition to the discussion/conclusion): Lab Write-Up Question: Describe the experimental procedure you would follow to isolate the oil in a pure form. Start with the aqueous extract and then write specific steps to follow. Imagine that you are writing the last part of this lab manual for future students! II.
