Drugs and Society: Some Basic Issues (Lecture 2) www.cit.cornell.edu/act/cst/howto_selfenroll.shtml 2 topics: - Social Science versus common sense - everyone uses common sense in daily life - predictive power is pretty good - assessments of credibility are also pretty good - great novelists have a depth of insight few social scientists can rival Limitations of common sense. It is parochial - views of alcohol - condemned in india - people sleep on sleeps in front of liquor stores; not good role models for responsible alcohol use - part of daily life in italy - even very small children will get sips of wine with their meals - acting drunk: serious norm violation - so, despite widespread use of alcohol; alcoholism/disease is modest - hence, perceptions of drinkers differs enormously - difference also between italy, which discourages heavy drinking, and france, where it is more accepted so italy has fewer alcohol problems Views of Opiates are similarly diverse - traditionally accepted in parts of china and middle east Views of tobacco are similarly diverse - traditionally accepted in US, condemned by Siks, Mormons, and others -Consequently what is valid form of recreation in one society or subgroup (class), may be seen as condemnable vice in others Social Science Approaches to Drug Use - further limitations of common sense: Self-fulfilling prophesies - classic example – Rosenthal experiments - 1 in 5 students – labeled arbitrarily labeled as “spurters” did indeed do better - others who did well (who were not labeled as spurters) were viewed more negatively (since they violated teachers expectations) - hence; “achievement” tests became self-fulfilling prophesy -
