Lecture 33 Part I Energy Balance Change of Weight = Energy in = Energy out Diet Record Keeping (NS 115 Diet Record) -distribution of energy intake - mean intake was 1800 calories (a little low should be about 2200) - median was about 1700 - why isn't it higher? - food that you didn't record b/c we have extremely poor memory about what we ate and how much – we tend to underestimate quantity - huge range of values for intake - occurs b/c: - range of lifestyle (from football players to geeks) - range of food that you eat daily (don't eat the same amount every day) -% calories from by protein, fat, carbs - 28% from fat - 55% carbs (should be greater than 60%) - 17% protein (too much – as adult you only need 6% calories from protein!) Perils of Protein - talked about osteoporosis - talked about cancer - talked about hypertension - one further effect : Environment - more profitable to sell animal protein than grains Protein and the Environment : - to produce 1 lb of beef requires 30 lb of feed - requires more energy to produce beef
