Lecture 23: Losing Weight -What we know about human eating behaviors: - strong environmental influences - weak biological influences - rapid dieting doesn't work Who makes money from selling you a diet? - print media - google – lots of ads for obesity/weight loss - amazon – thousands of books - pharmaceutical industry - all pills = worthless - most marketed as foods, which get by the law - weight loss programs - tops - weight watchers - in almost every major hospital – only to make money - Bariatric Medicine - gastric bypass - other surgeries - 900,000 clinics The Epidemic of Obesity - still going up - only one group that seemed to stop gaining weight – but may be at a plateau : white women - obesity of children increasing Prevalence of people who are attempting to diet: - 45% males - 55% females have attempted to lose weight in the past year - not that people aren't aware: problem: - meta-analysis: statistical analysis of public studies that followed them after they completed their diet - average weight loss through any kind of diet : 10 kg - curve plateaus at 3 or 3.5 kg - regain about 85% of weight after a year (the real problem) Why Rapid Dieting (1200 kcal or less) doesn't work
