Unformatted text preview: Lecture 36: Nutraceuticals and Alternative Eating Part I- hypocrites once said use food as your medicines White Willow Bark- widely used medicine in world- contains salicin (aspirin)- when you eat converted to acetyl-salicylic acid in liver- major inflammatory effects (blocks production of cytokines responsible for inflammation)- due to block of prostaglandin synthesis - which is responsible for fevers (resetting of temperature regulation in brain in hypothalamus)- responsible for swelling- feeling irritable (because of release of cytokines)- Pure aspirin marketed by german company bayer- many people can't tolerate it because it causes gastric secretions to occur- so artificial aspirins such as ibuprofen (anti-inflammatory and fever reduction), tylenol (only relieves fever, not really inflammatory) are marketed Evidence for prevention ? 1. prevents cardiovascular disease- anticoagulant 2. prevents stroke (also due to being an anticoagulant) 3. prevents alzheimer's disease (very progressive disease, don't know how to reverse it)-probs due to anti-inflamatory effects...
