EST 330 Notes: Monday April 17, 2006 Finishing Wildfires: -In California and fire prone areas people like to build homes in the urban wildfire interface -Insurance companies began to withdraw fire insurance coverage starting in the 1990’s -People moving to homes in the urban-wildlife interface need to be aware of the hazards they face and take the proper precautions -There is a 20-year window to clear the unnatural accumulation of fuel that has built up in many forests due to the wildfire suppression policies. -Ponderosa pines in Arizona have a fire cycle of 2-4 years but some have not seen fire in 80 years -Controlled burns can be used to reduce these unnatural accumulations but they must be rigorously monitored -70% of controlled burns are done in the southeastern states -Problems with Controlled Burns: -Smoke can travel from the fire to adjacent areas causing visibility issues and have lead to lawsuits over car accidents -Smoke traveling to adjacent areas can cause air pollution issues, the
