Raion Sabo Sabo 1 Chem 3BL Section 311 2/9/10 A Magtrieve Oxidation in the Absence of Solvent - preformed on 2/3/2010 Purpose: The purpose of this experiment is to oxidize a primary alcohol without over oxidizing to create an aldehyde. This experiment also allows us to explore oxidization of alcohols without harming the environment or the experimenters. Previous chromium reagents were proven to involve hazardous fumes and were difficult to recycle, the newer Magtrieve reagent is safe for scientists and fully recyclable with relative ease. During the experiment, the oxidation reaction is performed and then various tests are taken to verify that the new compound matches the predictions. Discussion: The oxidation with Magtrieve is a reaction designed to run without solvent and is purely driven by heat. After the 4-chlorobenzyl alcohol and an excess of Magtrieve are combined in a beaker, heat is applied to the base of the beaker using a sand bath. This allows for the base of the beaker to be heated at a controlled pace in order to keep the top of the beaker at room temperature or colder. Also, a watch glass acts as a cover for the beaker and is cooled by ice cubes. Upon heating, the solid alcohol melts (28ºC) and combines with Magtrieve to oxidize and form the desired aldehyde product in its gaseous phase (due to high vapor pressure). As the gas aldehyde molecules move to the top of the beaker they come in contact with the cooled glass surfaces to solidify and form clear, glossy, solid crystals.
