Stilley 1 Thomas Stilley Abram Foley ENGL 15 , sec. 18 22 February 2010 The Transition The movie “The Graduate” directed by Mike Nichols is an anti-establishment film that tells the story about the coming of age of a man named Benjamin Braddock played by Dustin Hoffman . Ben who recently graduated from college with a Bachelor’s degree is confused about his future . He is pulled in numerous directions by his parents, friends, and other acquaintances including Mrs . Robinson a married woman who is a close friend of the family. Mike Nichols, focuses on two things . First, the conflicts between the young and old generations during the sixties , and second the superficiality of human relationships. These show the similarities and differences of the Vietnam era and today , and the transition between the two. In the movie there is a generation gap between the old and young characters , much like there is today . During the 1960’s , the time period of the movie, the Vietnam War , racial and women’s equality were the crucial issues in American society . These issues created a huge conflict between the old generation and their set of values and the new ideas of the younger generation . However, the young generation was still trying to find their in the midst of all the chaos surrounding them . They were trying to set their own standards and values. In the movie
