Syllabus for Econ 189 – Law & Ethics University of California Santa Barbara Winter 2010 Professor: Douglas E. Kulper, Esq. E-mail: dkulper@fcoplaw.com Class Meeting Information Class Time: Tuesday/Thursday, 6:30 PM – 07:45 PM Room No: Webb 1100 Final Exam: Friday, March 19, 7:30 PM – 10:30 PM Course Description Three hours lecture/discussion/issue solving. This course provides a basic understanding of the legal and ethical framework within which U.S. businesses operate. The course includes a broad overview of court procedures and in-depth coverage of selected topics including contracts, torts, corporations, and property rights. Required Texts Introduction to Business Law, 3rd Edition, by Beatty/Samuelson (South-Western/Cengage ‘10) Winners Never Cheat: Even in Difficult Times , by Jon M. Huntsman (Wharton School Publishing ‘09) (IBL: CengageBrain.com $59.49 eText; $2.99 per chapter; $106.99 paperback) Materials 1. Access to GauchoSpace at https://gauchospace.ucsb.edu/ 2. Articles on GauchoSpace Course Format As discussed below, there will be multiple exams and mini-quizzes, with no typical mid-term or final exam. This course will be rather flexible and students will be responsible for checking e-mail and/or GauchoSpace each week for announcements, corrections, and clarifications to the schedule . GauchoSpace This class is set up on GauchoSpace. I will post announcements and other relevant information on GauchoSpace regularly throughout the quarter. Grades are also on GauchoSpace. Registered Econ 189 students are automatically enrolled in GauchoSpace. Reading Assignments Because the exams/quizzes will cover the reading assignments on a regular basis, it is important that students attend class and keep up with the reading (an average of 30-50 pages each week). I will assign reading assignments for every class meeting. The assignments will include text material and/or readings posted on GauchoSpace for the week.
