-02/08/10- Colonial Latin America 1. Colonial encounters -At this point in time there were 3 main sizable empires in Latin America that had urban centers: Mayans, Incas, and Aztecs. A. Hispaniola -Island that includes Haiti and Dominican Republic. -Christopher Columbus landed here with his conquistadors, which exemplify a warrior mentality looking for gold. -Upon arrival, they do not find riches, and take out their anger on the local population. -The native population on Hispaniola and the surrounding islands were thus nearly wiped out. B. Conquest of Mexico (1519-1521) - Led by Hernan Cortes. Around 450 spaniards were able to overtake the Aztec empire. The capital city of Tenochtitlan (modern day Mexico city) was the largest - Other local tribes joined forces with the Spanish, because the Aztecs had conquered them previously and used their people for their daily sacrifices. - Disease led to more loss of life than any other factor in the Spanish conquest. The Indians Had no immunity that had been circulating in Eurasia for centuries. - Smallpox was the first outbreak that began wiping out civilizations. This has an incubation period of about two weeks. People fled the attacked cities and began
