Unformatted text preview: Assignment 1C: What is a City Song : Welcome to Atlanta (Coast to Coast Remix) by Jermaine Dupri featuring Ludacris, P. Diddy, Murphy Lee, and Snoop Dogg In the modern world, the city has taken a form of representation in popular music to reach across ages and oceans. Today, perhaps no other form of music has attributed to this as much as hip- hop, the current popular music. Through the Internet, on the TV, across the radio waves, rhymes about the “hood” and the pride those artists take in their hometowns can be heard vividly. Some of them give an image of the entire city having the culture of the “hood”. Very much like how Short described the “image selling” of modern cities today (Short, 1996). In the song “ Welcome to Atlanta Remix ”, the hip-hop artists rap about their “hood”. There is a common theme of the laid back “coolness” often seen in hip-hop. But each artist also say something unique about their cities. Each of them has a sense of pride when they talk about where they come unique about their cities....
