Design: Reliability, Validity and Sampling Measure Why can’t we just come out and ask? o People can’t always say for themselves the exact answer to a question o Measurement is the process of determining existence, characteristics, size, etc. through systematic observation Some concepts need multiple indicators Operationalization o Process of determining observable characteristics o Be exhaustive – male, female, transgender? o Be exclusive – number of hours online: 1-5, 6-10, 11-15, 16-20, 21+ Provides exact steps for gathering info Reliability and Validity Often talk about these in terms of a target o First response and second response both hit in almost the same spot ( ex. everyone says 4 or close to it for a question) This proves reliability, but not validity o Validity is the bullseye If most answers average right in the middle of the bullseye (what you want to understand), then it is reliable and valid Validity Measures what you think it is measuring
