ChBE421 Problem Set #2 Fall 2009 1. In this era of high energy prices, there is a focus on renewable sources of energy such as wind energy. Consider a large windmill 30m in diameter. On a windy day, suppose that the windmill entrains a stream of air 25 m in diameter at a speed of 14 m/s. Downstream of the windmill, the entrained stream exits over a large diameter at a speed of 5 m/s. The pressure equals atmospheric pressure at both inlet and outlet. Find the power (in megawatts) generated by the windmill. Density of air: ρ = 1. 2 kg/m 3 2. Two fluid streams with velocities u 1 and u 2 flow between parallel plates separated by a distance 2 h as shown. The streams enter a mixing zone and emerge with uniform velocity U . The pressure at each cross-section is uniform and viscous forces around the control volume are negligible. Find the pressure change across the mixing zone. Find the lost work. 3. You are responsible for the installation of exhaust fans at your plant. Each fan is 5 ft in diameter and entrains a stream of air 12 ft

### What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

Kiran Temple University Fox School of Business ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

Dana University of Pennsylvania ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
