HPS Jung Hun(Jason) Kim Chapter 9 Key terms 1. Cancer – The growth and spread of abnormal cells 2. Mutation – The process by which a normal cell becomes abnormal 3. Dysplasia – An abnormal cell that is not cancer 4. Oncogene – A gene that increases the risk of cancer in a person who carries it 5. Metastasis – The spread of cancer from its place of origin to somewhere else in the body 6. Sacroma – A tumor that arises in bone, cartilage, or muscle 7. Lymphoma – A tumor that originates in lymphatic tissue 8. Carcinoma – A tumor that arises from epithelial tissue 9. Deoxyribonucleic acid – Also known as DNA , the genetic code inside nearly all cells that gives instructions on how the cell will divide, grow, and function. 10. Carcinogen – A chemical or substance in the environment that can cause cancer in someone who is exposed to it 11. Virus – Microorganisms that invade other organisms and use their cellular materials to replicate itself 12. Biopsy – The removal and testing of a sample of cells or tissue to look for
