Unformatted text preview: • Reading Assignment Chapter 5: Metabolism I This chapter on microbial metabolism is the most difficult chapter in the textbook. It is difficult because it deals with a lot of concepts related to energy, energy conversion and ATP production. This is not a chapter to rush through. Work through each section slowly, giving yourself time to process and understand the information. It is critical that you understand each concept before you move on to the next one. Otherwise you will be totally confused by the end of the chapter. Coverage of this chapter has been divided into two separate modules (#5 and #6). The first two pages of the chapter discuss the characterization of reactions based on whether they are energy-releasing or energy-requiring reactions. At this point it would be a good idea to review the information on chemical reactions found on pages 35-36.
