Aseptic Technique Aseptic technique refers to a procedure that is performed under sterile conditions. This includes medical and laboratory techniques, such as with microbiological cultures. The purpose of aseptic technique is to prevent the culture that is being grown from being contaminated with ambient microbes, and to prevent the technician from becoming infected with the culture. 1) Wash hands before, during, and after handling a culture. 2) Wear latex or nitrile gloves while working with a culture. 3) Once gloves are on, do not touch your face, clothing, or other people. 4) Change your gloves if you change tasks or after they become soiled. 5) Sterilize all equipment with either UV light (i.e. filter funnels for a minimum of 3

Do not set it on the counter to cool. 7) When opening petri dishes, culture containers, etc. do so with the same hand every time. Do not touch the inside lip of a container or its lid. Always hold a container and its cap on the outside and do not let the cap come in contact with another surface. 8) Do not reuse disposable equipment. 9) Keep exposure of the culture to the environment to a minimum.
