Kim 1 Michelle Kim AP Lang 03/09/2010 1995 Argumentative Essay- John Ruskin John Ruskin boldly evaluates the professions of soldiers and merchants in his critic of soldiers and merchants in 1860. According to Ruskin, soldiers are capable of self-sacrifice even though on the outer appearance they are the “killers” or “hired assassins” and they are more honorable than to merchants or manufacturers whose job is to buy and sell through trades. Indeed the soldiers deserve more precedence and honor than merchants, who were often referred as the blood suckers of money. When a crisis break out in a nation, soldiers are gathered or more likely drafted to save the nation from a great danger such as terrorism, war or epidemic where as merchants take the crisis opportunity to raise their price and earn tremendous amount of revenue. However, often soldiers do not receive the respect or tribute that they deserve due to frequent relativity to words such as cowards or killer.
