Assignment 1B-What is a City? 501 Queen, 10/16/09 Friday, 12:30PM From my observations on 501 Queen, I saw that the modern city follows Jacob's pattern in Seeing Change and also Burgess' concentric circle. It contains a Central Business District (CBD) with tall skyscrapers, businesses, and retail (eds. R. Legates and F. Stout, 2007). Where the people from outside converge and revolve around. The city is then characterized by the pattern of decreasing height and size of buildings and the change of buildings from skyscrapers and high-rises to smaller buildings such as shops and houses outside the CBD. The streetcar I took ran along Queen street, my starting point was slightly outside the CBD of Burgess' circle. Here was a pattern of old, low buildings, mostly shops. As the car approached the tall glass skyscrapers looming in the distance, the number of older buildings started to decline, and was gradually replaced with glistening, modern structures. Then there was a change in the urban landscape that told me I was in the
