Stata Walkthrough: an introduction Stata should be available on computers in the ITS computer labs on campus. For information about labs and lab locations, go to http://its.unc.edu/labs/ . To access Stata on one of the Windows machines, select Start > Statistical Applications > Stata. ( The most recent version is Stata 10, but any recent version is fine. ) You can open a dataset from the menus: File > Open, and then select your dataset. ( Stata files have a .dta extension. ) Stata should show you four different windows. The “command line” in the bottom right is where you tell Stata what to do. In the top left, the “Review” window shows the commands entered since you opened the program. Almost all menu options have equivalent text commands, and Stata also lists these. ( For example, when I open a file, Stata adds use "/Users/swlt/Economics/Datums/cpsmar05.dta" to the Review window. ) If you click a command in the Review window, it will appear in the command line, which is handy if you want to repeat or modify an earlier command. Stata displays output in the top right window.
