SCIENCE IS ASKING QUESTIONS • Question: “What is the most significant scientific question we must address in our life time?” • Possible Answer: “What will be the rate and trajectory of global environmental change” - an opinion EARTH SYSTEM SCIENCE • Looks at Earth as a complex system • Many interacting parts • Involves aspects of – Biological – Chemical – Physical • AND…. – Economic – Political – Societal THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD • “Every Event has a physical explanation”
